My self care routine to success

how 5 minutes of growth each day changed my life, and can change yours too

My name is Maria Giorlando and I am the creator, or rather the identifier, of the GROWTh lifestyle blog and self care routine. 'GROWTh' is the acronym I use to describe my daily self care routine that I have been using for the last three years which has helped me find, clarify and develop my self-confidence, my self-worth, and my purpose in life. GROWTh stands for Gratitude, Reflection, Optimistic affirmations, Wellness lifestyle, and THink of others.

In the winter of 2016, I was in my third year of nursing and I was working for a home care company. I worked alongside a woman named Lorna, who I consider to be one of the most influential people in my life at the time. Interestingly enough, she was the only person who actually invested the time to get it through to my ignorant, arrogant, and immature 20 year-old self that I was a valuable being and that I should respect, cherish, and LOVE the person that I am.

Throughout 8 months of working side-by-side with Lorna, I began practicing self care every day. After two months of practicing these daily self care actions I had lost about 10 lbs, joined a volleyball league, I signed up for my first pageant, and I felt truly happy and excited to wake up each day and experience the bliss and abundance that life can be. Now, 3 years later, I am amazed at the accomplishments I have achieved and at the ambitions I set for myself. Winning the national title of Miss Canada 2018, travelling and inspiring audiences of thousands of individuals across Canada, and unlocking an abundance of opportunities that continue to help me grow and give back to others are just SOME of the incredible experiences I have gained after committing and prioritizing my personal GROWTh.

A few months ago, in the fall of 2018, I was reflecting on which specific practices had the most impact on me throughout this journey. I realized that these five simple daily practices had the greatest impact on my mindset, mood, and overall well-being over the last several years of my life. The best part about this self care routine? It only takes 5 MINUTES of your time. How so you might ask? Each day complete these five steps:

  • Express Gratitude for anything you can think of for one minute

  • For one minute, Reflect on something negative from the previous day you choose to leave behind, and something positive that you will bring to the next day

  • Optimist affirmations- One minute of saying positive statements in the present tense as if they were already your reality (Eg- I have so much joy that surrounds me in life)

  • Choose at least ONE healthy practice/habit you will complete today to embody a Wellness lifestyle. For one minute determine how you will accomplish this habit, whether it be through nutrition, physical activity, or mindfulness

  • THink of others is simply to perform one selfless act of kindness for someone else

Seems easy, right? So easy that we don't think to consistently do it each day. Yet, when we are consistent with these small practices that is when we notice the positive changes that occur in our lives. I encourage you to incorporate 5 minutes of GROWTh into your life for one week. See how your mood, mindset, and life begin to enlighten.
